How to Use Baking Soda to Naturally Relieve Heartburn

baking soda waterThe next time you have an upset stomach due to heartburn, don't worry if you've run out of antacids, just use a little baking soda. Heartburn is usually caused by too much acid your stomach that irritates your esophagus, which in turn creates an unpleasant feeling in your chest that makes it seem like there's something wrong with your heart. Hence, the term "heartburn." Baking soda is an alkaline substance that will help neutralize the acids in your stomach and relieve the symptoms of heartburn.

You'll Need:

- baking soda
- a glass of potable water

Directions:

1. Dilute 2 teaspoons of baking soda into the glass of water. Some recipes call for using even more baking soda, but I think that's rather unnecessary, and more baking soda gives the mixture a more unpleasant taste.

To Use:

Drink the mixture ...

... that's it.

Usually when I use this natural remedy, my stomach feels better within a matter of minutes, but that may vary from person to person. This recipe is also probably more appropriate for adults, and shouldn't be tried on children.

It is important to keep in mind baking soda should be used sparingly for this natural remedy, which is why I don't use more than 2 teaspoons of baking soda per mixture. If you ingest too much baking soda you may end up counteracting the acid in your system to a point that your stomach actually produces more acid in order to maintain its digestive functions.

Using external ingredients to settle an upset stomach, whether by using this natural baking soda remedy or by using commercially available antacids, should also not become a habit. Habitually using external ingredients to combat heartburn can be very harmful to your body. If an upset stomach is a common occurrence for you, you should see a doctor to determine if it's a symptom of a bigger problem instead of trying to remedy it yourself all the time.
